This latest wave of shuttering publications, spearheaded by the Culture and Islamic Guidance Ministry, occurred on Sunday. The Press Supervisory Board, part of the ministry, banned the magazines for publishing "photographs of corrupt foreign artists and details about their decadent lives" and "advertising for forbidden medicines and articles contrary to morality and offensive to the ethnic minorities," Agence France-Presse reported.
This unrelenting war on freedom of expression has reached absurd proportions," CPJ Executive Director Joel Simon said. The Iranian state is party to the International Covenant on Civil and Political rights, which enshrines freedom of expression and the free flow of information. The London-based daily Al-Hayat quoted the editor of Donya-ye Tasvir, Ali Moallam, as saying today that the ban of his magazine "came as a message to the Iranian movie industry."
He added that the next to be targeted "would be all writers, screenwriters, film school students, and film directors in Iran." The Press Supervisory Board, which is tightly controlled by hard-liners, also warned 13 other publications about the consequences of not abiding by the stringent provisions of the Iranian press law.

The Federal Communications Commission order, which passed unanimously, prohibits telecommunications companies from inking exclusive deals with multi-unit buildings that are primarily residential. It also throws out any exclusive contracts that already exist. The action builds upon the FCC's move last fall to ban exclusive deals for cable and Internet TV companies in apartment buildings.
It also extends a 2000 FCC order that banned exclusive contracts for telephone service in non-residential "multiple tenant environments," such as office buildings and shopping centers. Commissioners said the step was necessary to provide for consistency across various communications platforms and to encourage greater competition among providers.
More than 30 percent of American households live in so-called "multiple dwelling units." All consumers, regardless of where they live, should be able to enjoy the benefits of competition," said FCC Chairman Kevin Martin, a Republican. Telephone companies both large and small, however, have supported the FCC's bans both on exclusive phone and TV deals, arguing they're good for competition.
The National Cable and Telecommunications Association, which represents major cable providers, asked a federal court last December to halt the provision of the rules that throws out existing exclusive contracts, arguing the rule contradicts a 2003 FCC order that seemed to encourage such arrangements.
The real estate industry--namely the National Multi Housing Council--opposes both orders, arguing there's no evidence that regulation is necessary and that the FCC doesn't have authority to do so. The Press Association: '35% rise in mortgage debt advice'
Citizens Advice said staff at its bureaux in England and Wales had seen a 35% increase in people contacting them for help with the issue in January and February compared with the same months of 2007. They are also seeing a continuing rise in the number of people facing problems paying for basic essentials such as gas, electricity, water and telephone bills and council tax.
A survey of nearly three-quarters of Citizens Advice Bureaux in England and Wales showed they had dealt with 215,000 new debt problems during the first two months of 2008 alone. The group said the increase reflected the recent rises in the cost of living and suggested growing numbers of people were having problems keeping up with essential household bills. Teresa Perchard, director of policy at Citizens Advice, said: "It is a worrying trend that our bureaux are reporting a very sharp increase in the number of mortgage arrears problems they are dealing with.
These latest figures paint a worrying picture, suggesting a significant number of households are struggling to meet their most basic living costs. The combination of big increases in household bills, especially fuel, and rising housing costs is putting additional pressure on people's finances when they are already stretched to the limit."
The group said debt problems relating to credit, store and charge cards still remained the largest category of debt problems it dealt with although, unusually for the time of year, credit card-related debt problems had fallen by 9%, although those involving overdrafts were up by almost 7% year on year. MTV Networks' (NYSE: VIA) Nickelodeon is readying the first of 600 casual games that will be introduced across its collection of websites, NYT reports. The games are part of the Nickelodeon Kids and Family group's planned $100 million investment to create games through 2009. Separately, MTVN said last August, a few weeks after Nickelodeon announced its gaming investment, that it would spend $500 million on creating games on its websites through 2009 as well.
Gaming strategy : To get a sense of the importance Nickelodeon holds for games, the network says 25 million unique users were drawn to its online games last month. The closest competitor is Yahoo (NSDQ: YHOO) Games, which drew 15.5 million uniques that same month, according to comScore; Electronic Arts (NSDQ: ERTS) and Disney (NYSE: DIS) followed with 12 million each. Social nets, like MySpace and Facebook, are positioning themselves to grab a slice of the gaming pie as well.
Nickelodeon's games will be situated on sites that correspond to a variety of kid-related demos: preschoolers, tweens, teenage boys, moms. The greatest growth prospects appears to be with the ones that aim just above the youngest players. Arnold Schwarzenegger gets his way. The proposals would shave & 036;1.3 million from next year's budget. Brusa's budget-cutting recommendations also include having the district take over some of the special education services for severely handicapped students that have been provided by the county. That would result in a savings of & 036;752,000, he calculates, the single biggest item.
Staggering school start times to maximize transportation staff time would save another & 036;50,600. Mike Wooley, president of the classified union, isn't happy with the proposed cuts, but said he understands the seriousness of the district's fiscal dilemma. We could be losing three full-time custodial positions," he said. They also are considering several library resource positions.
