Two Years For Man Behind Nine Bogus Weddings (from Evening Times)
Lamin Manneh, dubbed "the wedding planner", brought men to Paisley were he paid women to marry them in a bid to secure UK citizenship. But the 36-year-old was caught out after using his own name and address at local registry offices.
As revealed in later edition's of yesterday's Evening Times, Paisley Sheriff Court was told Manneh was just a chauffeur to the men and paid for travel and accommodation out of the £500 he received per marriage. His conviction was part of a UK-wide investigation into sham marriages by the UK Border Agency.
The agency said it had evidence of 107 sham marriages but charges were brought over 13 and Manneh later pleaded guilty to arranging nine. Phil Taylor, Regional Director of UK Border Agency in Scotland said Manneh, of Woodley, Reading, now faced deportation. Duncan Macniven, the Registrar General for Scotland, added: "Abuse of Scotland's marriage laws is unacceptable.
We hope this will send a clear signal that sham marriages have no place in Scottish society." The court was told Paisley had been identified as the "best place" to find women "primed" to be paid between £1000 and £2000 to marry. If the fake unions went undetected for two years the men would have gained the right to apply for more permanent status in the UK.
Defence agent Jonathan Manson said dad-of-three Manneh came from an impoverished village in Gambia. He said: "All he was doing was supporting his family. He has led a blameless life."
Manneh pleaded guilty on April 8 to arranging five marriages in Paisley, two in Renfrew and two in Glasgow's Park Circus Registry Office, all between April 2006 and February 2007. Depute fiscal Douglas Hamilton told the court it was not clear why Paisley had been chosen. He said: "The men and women in the Paisley area were more readily willing to do this than perhaps brighter and more honourable souls south of the Border." Manneh was sentenced to 24 months.

Dayton, Ohio Weather, News, Sports and Entertainment WDTN.com, 2 On Your Side News and Weather: Wedding splurges examined in Ohio author's book
Katherine Jellison says the average cost of a wedding today is $30,000, and lavish engagement parties are increasingly popular. The book is called "It's Our Day: America's Love Affair with the White Wedding." Jellison says it wasn't until after World War II that Americans had enough disposable income to marry in such a formal fashion.
And even now as American consumers are pinching their pockets and struggling amid rising food costs, gas prices and a worrisome economy, the $50 billion wedding industry continues to boom. She says Americans see big weddings as a sign of social status. Copyright 2008 The Associated Press. All rights reserved.

Broadway musical about weddings as minefields - Arts - NJ.com
A Catered Affair. Where: Walter Kerr Theatre, 219 W. 48th St., New York. When: Now in previews, opens April 17. Mondays-Saturdays at 8 p.m.; Wednesdays and Saturdays at 2 p.m. How much: $29.50-119.50. The film "Father of the Bride" depicted a wedding as a bittersweet rite of passage.
The Wedding Singer" likened receptions to no-holds-barred confessionals. The Graduate" concluded with wedding interruptus. Now there's "A Catered Affair," a new Broadway musical about weddings as minefields, gingerly negotiated by mothers and daughters.
Based on the 1956 M-G-M film "The Catered Affair" (starring Bette Davis and Debbie Reynolds), the musical is written by Harvey Fierstein and John Bucchino and stars longtime Broadway star Faith Prince with Livingston native Leslie Kritzer. The show explores the relationship between Aggie, a woman who feels life has passed her by, and her daughter, Janey, who is about to be married to Ralph.
Money is tight, but Aggie wants to give Janey a big wedding -- a "catered affair." Sitting in the back of the Walter Kerr Theatre, where the show is in previews before opening April 17, Kritzer chatted with The Star-Ledger.
She is perhaps best known to New Jersey audiences for her acclaimed performance in the 2001 production of "Funny Girl" at the Paper Mill Playhouse in Millburn. Prince arrived shortly afterward, carrying a container of matzo ball soup for lunch. Leslie, when did you first meet Faith?
Leslie Kritzer: I first met Faith Prince when she came to speak at my school, the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, which is her alma mater as well. Reporters went backstage and talked with Faith, and I thought, "I want to be like her." I never got to see her in the show, but I bought a CD and listened to it over and over. I was fixated on Faith Prince. So when she came to visit the conservatory, she signed my CD.
The next time I saw her was at a reading of "A Catered Affair" in July 2007, years later. What was that moment like for you? LK: It was really awesome. It's been a surreal experience, to work with someone whom I grew up idolizing. Just, wow! I can't believe I'm playing your daughter. She's been so warm and lovely to me. Like a mom to me and a friend. Mother-daughter relationships are complicated.
LK: Moms know how to push your buttons. When I'm around my mother in real life, I have a tendency to be on the defensive. This role allows me to really show that. Also, frequently you want to please your mother but still be who you are.
You want to be a woman in your own right but you want your mother to be happy. Aggie never had the wedding she wanted, but Janey can give Aggie that wedding through her own. I do that in real life; I try to give my mom hope and inspiration. You and Faith share a lovely song: "One White Dress." Is that a turning point?
LK: Aggie has never taken her daughter shopping, and Janey has never tried on something as beautiful as that dress or heard her mother say "You're beautiful." It's the first time Janey buys into the idea that a big wedding might be a good thing. She's a very practical girl. She doesn't think about pretty and not pretty.
In that very private moment, she thinks about herself as beautiful for the first time and she also hears the story about how her mother and father got married. She starts to want the wedding for her mom as well as for herself. Faith Prince: Leslie's my favorite person I've ever been on stage with. LK: Oh, my God. Hearing that makes me tear up. FP: I'm telling you. I mean, like, ever. Because we are just there to serve the piece and not ourselves. There's something incredibly freeing about that.
That feeling is why I got into this business. And you rarely have it, because most of the time -- I hate to say it -- a lot of actors are in it for themselves. But this has been a joyous experience. So she can never get another job. What motivates Aggie? FP: Aggie has immense love, but doesn't know how to express it. She's stopped her feelings.
Her marriage got off on the wrong track, and she doesn't think her husband loves her.. Â. Â. She's one of those mothers who withholds. Her son has died. Janey wants to leave home. It all throws a wrench. But Aggie finally decides, let's move on to something we can put our energy into, which would be a wedding. What is the fixation with big weddings? What kind of a wedding did you have, Faith?
FP: I eloped. LK: I'm not married. FP: The last thing I wanted was to plan something for 100,000 people and walk down the aisle in a white dress. For a lot of people it's their glory moment. Everybody's come to witness this thing. But there's so much agenda. That's why I didn't do it. Did either of you watch the M-G-M film? LK: Once. I watched it to get the feel, the tone.
Then I left it alone, because I'm just way too good a mimic. FP: She's an amazing mimic. I have a hard time imagining Debbie Reynolds in the Bronx. FP: But you know how I took it? As a woman of that time trying to get out of the Bronx. Dyeing her hair blond, trying to be not like her parents. LK: My mom grew up in the Bronx during the early 1950s, one of seven brothers and sisters.

Scott's mailbag: cats vs. babies - Opinion Columns
Just like William Safire or Robert Novak, I do this by taking on controversial topics including abortion, the role of religion in politics and cat poop.
I didn't realize the last one was contentious until a few weeks ago, when I wrote a column suggesting, in a deliberately cautious tone so as not to offend anybody, that cat owners are idiots. The cat people were not happy about this.
They mainly aired their grievances on The Daily Illini's comment boards ("I think I'll keep the cat and get rid of you" was a typical response), but there was even a letter to the editor published the following Monday pointing out that my column included a logical fallacy. This upset me because, in the process of writing a serious and dignified piece about cat poop, I'd never intended to dishonor the legacies of Plato and Aristotle.
But my favorite response, in the sense that it was the only one that did not refer to me as a "scum-sucking scumwad," was an e-mail from concerned reader Jessica Kubo. Jessica, a senior in Engineering, took issue with my complaint that cat-owning friends of mine have a smelly apartment. I know a family with young kids whose house smells like diapers," she wrote.
Should they get rid of their baby? I've come to the conclusion after reading this column that if cat owners are psycho, so are baby owners." My initial reaction, as I'm sure it was for many of you, was to wonder if Jessica Kubo was available. My second thought was that she might be onto something.
Cats, unlike babies, don't make their owners pay for four years of a state college for a degree in a made-up field like Rhetoric, Cultural Studies or Engineering. Cats also don't move back in with you after realizing the best job openings in the political science field involve working a deep fryer.
Jessica also felt slighted by what I wrote about Cat Genie, a product that eliminates your feline's various emissions without you having to touch anything. I would like to point out a similar product, also on Amazon, called the Diaper Genie," Jessica wrote. Like the Cat Genie, this product (which is intended for the disposal of dirty diapers) appears to have its share of problems; reviews on Amazon describe it as 'smelly' and easily broken."

GlossLip » Jennifer Lopez Shows Off Her Six Million Dollar Babies
The happy new parents spoke candidly to PEOPLE about the pregnancy, addressing everything from Jennifer's weight gain to rumors of infertility. For all the details, pick up the new issue, on newsstands Friday. And guess what? The babies..
You can see airbrushed photos of Jennifer in the $120,000 nursery, of Jennifer holding the babies, and of Jennifer gazing lovingly at Marc as he holds the babies. People magazine has been counting down to this on their website with the expectancy of a lunar launch. I guess they need to get their money's worth out of this little deal. But here's what I propose: I say that we don't buy the magazine. 6M for airbrushed photographs of J-Lo, in which the twins just so happen to appear, is ridiculous. Jennifer and Marc do not need this money.
They have more money than they know what to do with, and that is one thing that keeps them distant from reality. As I said yesterday, I have no problem with celebs splurging on whatever they like.. But by all accounts this $6M is going straight into their bank account, instead of being used, for example, to help those mothers and children who are less fortunate.
People could have offered to donate that money to a reputable charity in J-Lo and Marc's name, instead of giving it to greedy celebrities who will undoubtedly use it to purchase yet more gilded trim for the nursery. This is simply a publicity stunt for Jennifer.. I don't doubt that she loves her babies very much, but let's not fool ourselves into thinking that she wanted to share this moment with fifty million of her closest friends.
So, sorry.. I won't be spending one red cent to buy a People magazine. I don't even really want to link to them in this story, but I guess I have to. Regardless, they are cute, and I hope they live long and healthy lives. First i would just like to say that they are not the first celebs to charge money for there baby pictures.
Both of them are very private when it comes to there charity's. They give what they give most of the time without the press knowing anything about it. Both of them seem like down to earth people. I like many other people will be buying there magazine. I as a boriqua support them in any way i can.
She has waited a long time for this so Congrats. Comment by carmen irizarry & 8212; March 20, 2008 8:58 am Of course, they are cute. What baby isn't?? US retailer faces row over donation deal Calling guardian.co.uk
It was latest updated at 18:30 on March 12 2008. Photograph: Tim Boyle Getty With its extensive billboards displaying rippling six packs, heaving cleavages and denims at half mast, the American fashion retailer Abercrombie & Fitch has sporadic qualms approximately using sexuality beseech to sell clothes. So activists acquire questioned if its designation should be above the door of a children's hospital.
One of America's largest pediatric institutes, the Nationwide Children's Infirmary in Columbus, Ohio, is facing boiling protests over a agreement to grant "naming rights" to A&F in return for a $10m donation.
Under the philanthropic deal, the hospital's casualty middle testament become the Abercrombie & Fitch Emergency Department and Trauma Centre. Critics state it is a sponsorship arrangement absent extremely far. Corporate naming rights are an inherently slippery slope," says Susan Linn, employer of the Crusade for a Commercial-Free Childhood. A&F is approach down that slope."
A&F pushes the boundaries of suggestivity another than other mainstream American retailers. Police in Virginia last month confiscated posters from one store showing semi-exposed buttocks and breasts. They cited the boss with an obscenity charge. The firm's present span includes a T-shirt declaring that "one man's junk is another woman's treasure" and promotional A&F magazines own used photography by Bruce Weber, noted for his objectification of the workman physique.
At the firm's original London store carry on year, customers were greeted by two models draining nix but jeans and flipflops. They've built their trade-mark by sexualising and objectifying children," said Linn. A business which has such cynical disregard for childrens' wellbeing should not be allowed to align itself with healing."
The investigation is part of a broader discussion in America about the spread of corporate sponsorship over habitual facilities. One resident authority in Wisconsin recently offered to sell the rights to cognomen its aerial schools. McDonald's courted inquiry in Florida by advertising on undergraduate announcement cards.
A Florida museum even raised coinage last year by auctioning the naming rights to a latest species of butterfly discovered by its researchers. The president of the Nationwide Children's Hospital's fundraising foundation, Jon Fitzgerald, said A&F was one of alive with companies which back the hospital's business to feather interest regardless of patients' ability to pay.
As a not-for-profit, freestanding children's hospital, philanthropy is central to our ability to fulfil that mission and we are grateful to all donors that choose to base our work," he said. In a statement, an A&F spokesman said: "We are proud of our long-standing relationship with this hospital and satisfied to cure secure its blaze future."
