Economy hurts golf tourney's sponsorship chances ajc.com

We didn't realize how important you were." The end result, recalled Steve Jackson, who also worked for G-P at the time, was tens of millions of dollars in new pulp sales. There are," Jackson notes, "those kinds of stories."

Jackson, who's now on the search committee looking for a new title sponsor for the tournament, hopes corporate America takes the point: Being title sponsor of a PGA Tour event like the one in Atlanta can pay off in many ways.

Now, if only someone would seize the opportunity to spend about $7 million a year for five years, plus related marketing costs, to put their name on the event. The tournament's effort to land a title sponsor has been hampered by the downturn in the economy and by the reversal of fortunes of many companies that might otherwise jump at the chance to put their name on the event. We are the victim of the timing of business economics," Jackson said.

People are saying, 'We're not going to increase our spending this year.' When the 2008 tournament concludes Sunday afternoon at the TPC Sugarloaf in Duluth, AT&T will drop off as the event's title sponsor, leaving a vacuum that no other company has yet filled. When AT&T merged with BellSouth, it inherited the tournament, but with two other PGA Tour title sponsorships, plus two on the Champions Tour, the company gave notice last November it would trim the Atlanta event.

If no title sponsor is found soon, the tournament, after 40 years and essentially just two title sponsors (G-P and BellSouth AT&T), could disappear.

There is no single drop-dead date to find a sponsor, but the PGA Tour releases its 2009 schedule in November, and a company must be found before then, preferably well before then. Since January, Jackson, tournament director Dave Kaplan and other officials have contacted 149 companies and made presentations to 23 and formal proposals to seven.

Five of those prospects are still classified as "active," meaning that one might agree to serve as title sponsor. Every Atlanta-area company that could legitimately serve as a title sponsor has been contacted, they said. Gov. Sonny Perdue and U.S. Sens. Saxby Chambliss and Johnny Isakson have helped the search committee make contact with possible sponsors, as has as the Atlanta Sports Council, Jackson said.

If this had been 18 months ago, or 18 months from now, we'd probably have had a sponsor," Kaplan said. Technically, a would-be sponsor wouldn't have to spend any dollars until 2009.

But for many corporations, including a list of top Atlanta companies that have cut back through staff reductions and other cost paring, the idea of committing tens of millions of dollars to sponsor a golf tournament is unseemly. Several major local corporations called by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution are not interested in taking over the event's title sponsorship, including Coca-Cola, UPS and Georgia-Pacific. It's not something we will be doing," said Susan Stribling, spokesperson for Coca-Cola North America.

Jackson, Kaplan and company tout PGA Tour title sponsorship as a way to introduce a new product or brand, boost name recognition, and build or cement relationships with customers and partners. The PGA Tour, they say, reaches "influentials" - key corporate decision makers. For its money, a title sponsor gets extensive TV commercial air time, spots in the tournament pro-am event, signage throughout the course, hospitality opportunities during the week, and privileges at other TPC clubs. Plus, the sponsor gets the public relations value of backing a local charity.

Since 1989, the tournament, through the non-profit Atlanta Classic Foundation host organization, has donated more than $13 million to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta. Still, there are many alternatives if a company wants to spend money on sports. It's always competitive," said PGA Tour executive Tom Wade.

Companies have a lot of options how to spend their marketing and community dollars, and in this economic environment it's more challenging than normal." Vote for this story!

Richard Deitsch: Media Power Rankings for April - Richard Deitsch - SI.com

He said he would take a "brief" look. Cue interviewer, in this case, yours truly, smiling a skeptical smile.) One of the reasons for the rapid growth of sites such as Deadspin and The Big Lead is that they feed the sports media's obsession with itself, present company included.

Had I fronted a show that produced fireworks between a Pulitzer Prize-winning author ( Buzz Bissinger ) and one of sports blogging's major domos (Deadspin's Will Leitch ), I would have surfed harder than Duke Kahanamoku to get a sense of the coverage.

Costas described the show as "exhilarating and also frustrating." That's a fair assessment given the time constraints of television and the seemingly unlimited subjects under the banner of sports media. Since the show aired we've seen an endless platter of interesting takes, including this and this and this and this and this from bloggers and mainstream writers.

Costas himself engaged actively in dialogue with AOL's Michael David Smith and also spoke with Will Carroll of Baseball Prospectus (and occasionally SI.com). The show was not perfect -- for starters, I would have liked to have heard from more beat writers, the men and women who build the information walls -- but the attempt was more than admirable. 2. Ron Jaworksi and Kirk Herbstreit, ESPN: With all the airtime given last month to the tete-a-tetes between NFL draft wonks Mel Kiper Jr.

Todd McShay (THESE GUYS REALLY DISAGREE ON STUFF! IT'S NOT SEAN SALISBURY AND JOHN CLAYTON. WE SWEAR!) Jaworski and Herbstreit turned out to be the best part of ESPN's draft coverage. Truth be told, the Kiper-McShay duels were also entertaining -- at times). When informed people disagree, it makes for interesting viewing. 3. Buzz Bissinger, Internet punching bag Pulitzer Prize winner: If only he had offered his critique of the sports blog culture with the same reasoned, passionate and intelligent prose that earned him the admiration of literate sports fans.

Instead, Bissinger went reactionary. He threw out unfounded generalizations about sports bloggers. He let his conduct overshadow his content. Worst, he became the message. Since his ill-advised comments, Bissinger has privately apologized to Leitch and offered measured and cogent thoughts on the topic, including a thoughtful interview with Dan Le Batard 's Miami-based radio show and this Q&A with The Big Lead. I should not have used profanity," said Bissinger.

I shouldn't have been as hostile in my approach to Will Leitch because it makes me look bad. It's unprofessional. It's unfair to him. But I don't take back the words I said." For what it's worth, Costas said after the show that the segment was not set up as a Sonny Corleone -style hit on Leitch. I knew Buzz was coming with his game face on," Costas said, "but I had no idea what he would say." 4. Will Leitch, Deadspin founder: The usual disclosure: Leitch and I fit somewhere in that male gray area between acquaintances and friends.

I think he's a talented writer and I agree with him that the Web has created a new sports meritocracy that empowers non-journalists to reshape existing paradigms regarding what is newsworthy, relevant and tasteful. Deadspin.com would not exist unless there was an audience for it, and its audience cannot be classified by one strata. Nor can one easily classify sports bloggers, a lot consisting of lawyers, television writers and, yes, even folks living in their mother's basement.

Dedicated blogging is a very hard gig (even bad blogging is a hard job) and there are no days off if you want to build a loyal readership. In extreme cases, blogging can even cause death.)

Where I disagree with Leitch is the notion that posting photos of Cardinals quarterback Matt Leinart partying -- or reporting on the nighttime antics of ESPN's Chris Berman -- humanizes those subjects. Embarrassing details of famous people are a commodity -- just like corn or soybeans. You can monetize it and millions of people are interested in it.

One of my SI colleagues made an interesting point in an e-mail last week: He wrote that he didn't think Leitch should represent blogs anymore because he plays in both worlds, mainstream and blogging. You can't write for The New York Times and GQ and pretend to be an outsider," he wrote. It was an interesting point.

With Bissinger cast as the establishment foil and Leitch defending the position of the sports blogosphere on Costas Now, I found myself marveling at the irony of the moment. Sitting next to me as a guest of Leitch was David Hirshey, who writes keenly on soccer for Deadspin when he's not otherwise engaged as an executive editor at HarperCollins, one of the most powerful publishers in America.

As Leitch and Bissinger jousted on stage, as the well-connected and well-regarded Hirshey wondered if his pal was being setup, I kept thinking: Which guy is really representing the mainstream here?

5. " Gasbags on Parade ": NBC's Al Michaels, in full superiority mode, delivered this cruise missile in the direction of ESPN in a taped segment on Costas Now : "ESPN has had a major influence on sports but there are a lot of shows that I watch now where it's a screaming match," said Michaels.

Affirmed vs. Alydar: ’78 Derby revived the sports - BostonHerald.com

An already famous rivalry between two chestnut colts was set to explode on the first Saturday in May. Whom to pick? Alydar, the strapping liver chestnut with all the glamour of the famed Calumet Farm behind him, versus Affirmed, champion 2-year-old with an 18-year-old Kentucky boy named Steve Cauthen on his back. Both had more statistics and sentiment than any fan could ask for.

Maybe Alydar had the edge. Just a few weeks before, he’d won the Blue Grass Stakes at Keeneland by 13 lengths. He was a bit of a fairy-tale horse, a symbol not only of Calumet’s vaunted breeding stock but also of its resurrection as Lexington’s most famous thoroughbred farm.

The halcyon setting of red trim and white fences had produced eight Kentucky Derby winners, two Triple Crown horses - Whirlaway and Citation - in the 1940s, and a host of champion fillies. Affirmed might have played the upstart - he was born in Florida, after all - but he, too, had the goods, winning seven of nine starts in 1977, a year that ended with his Eclipse Award for best 2-year-old.

The symbols didn’t quite hold for the whole story, the one that follows the horses back to the barn and the breeding shed and happily ever after, but the crowd got its history, the start of one of the most exciting Triple Crown campaigns ever. The fact is," says racing historian Ed Bowen, "that this Triple Crown was the greatest contest in modern racing." That Derby Day was sunny and beautiful, as it nearly always seems to be.

Alydar’s trainer, 32-year-old John Veitch, had vanned him over from Calumet the day after the Blue Grass Stakes, and remembers a "media circus," with the theme of "Calu met’s return to prominence." Affirmed had plenty of fans as well, and his story was already deeply intertwined with that of Alydar. Affirmed was owned by Louis and Patrice Wolfson, who had a successful breeding and racing operation in Florida.

Patrice Wolfson was the daughter of famed trainer Hirsch Jacobs; Louis had bought Alydar’s sire Raise a Native as a yearling, the same horse who was Affirmed’s grandsire. Affirmed jockey Steve Cauthen had told the story of that Derby so many times over the years that it’s rote: The night before the Derby he’d slept on the floor of his family’s hotel room because it was his turn.

But he was used to it, and slept well, and the day of the race, tried to stay calm as he reviewed his and trainer Laz Barrera’s plan for the race. Then there was the walk up the track to the paddock, with the singing of the state song, and fans chanting "Alydar, Alydar." This was my first dance," Veitch said.

I’d won some big races before that, but there’s nothing like the Derby I it was magical." Finally, they were off, and there was Affirmed near the front. I got to the front because I really wanted to go when and if Alydar got close," Cauthen said. To me, he was always the horse I was going to have to beat to win the race." Once Affirmed got away from Sensitive Prince, "it pretty much happened as planned."

That is to say, Affirmed won the race from the second turn on without too much interference. In the beginning, Alydar was ninth, farther back in a race than he’d ever been, Veitch said. Although he rallied to second place, he still finished 11Z2 lengths behind Affirmed. 2008, Lexington Herald-Leader (Lexington, Ky.) Distributed by McClatchy-Tribune Information Services.

Exercise may lead to faster prostate tumor growth

Prostate tumors grew more quickly in mice who exercised than in those who did not, leading to speculation that exercise may increase blood flow to tumors, according to a new study by researchers in the Duke Comprehensive Cancer Center (DCCC) and the Duke Prostate Center. Our study showed that exercise led to significantly greater tumor growth than a more sedentary lifestyle did, in this mouse model," said Lee Jones, Ph.D., DCCC and senior investigator on this study.

Our thought is that we may, in the future, be able to use this finding to design better drug delivery models to more effectively treat prostate cancer patients, and those with other types of cancer as well." The findings were presented in a poster session at the American Association for Cancer Research annual meeting on April 13 in San Diego, Calif.

The study was funded by the United States Department of Defense, the Prostate Cancer Foundation and the American Urological Association Foundation, Rising Star in Urology Award, given to Stephen Freedland, one of the study"s investigators. The researchers implanted prostate tumors subcutaneously in the flanks of 50 mice and then put half of the mice in cages with exercise wheels and half in cages with no wheels. All mice were fed the same diet. On average, the exercising mice ran more than half a mile each day.

Researchers and clinicians know that a challenge in delivering chemotherapy and radiation to tumors can be their poor blood flow, so these findings may hint at a way in which to improve blood flow to tumors, perhaps then allowing for better distribution of medicine, he said.

We"re wondering, can we combine exercise with treatments such as chemotherapy, hormone therapy or radiation, to maximize the results we achieve in prostate cancer patients," Jones said. That question will be the subject of subsequent studies."

The researchers are currently conducting a validation study, in mice, in which tumors are injected directly into the prostate, thereby better simulating human prostate cancer, Jones said. Down the line, we will test this hypothesis in humans undergoing medical treatment for prostate cancer," he said.

The researchers want to caution men against interpreting these findings as an endorsement for not exercising for fear of getting or exacerbating cancer. These mice were not receiving treatment and we were allowing aggressive tumors to grow unchecked for the sake of the experiment," said study investigator Freedland, a urologist at Duke.

Patients would not find themselves in the same situation." This study gives us insight into which cellular pathways are affected by exercise, and starts to give us clues about how to harness the beneficial effects," said Michael Potter, a medical student at Duke and lead investigator on the study.

Ultimately, we hope that this knowledge will help us use exercise to both deliver medicines more effectively and protect the body from the harmful side effects of treatment, as we already know it can."

This is one of the first studies to look at the physiological effects of exercise on the tumor itself, rather than examining the quality-of-life or symptom-control effects of exercise in cancer patients, Jones said. The findings were a bit surprising, but provide a very important and exciting foundation upon which to build," he said. Other researchers involved in this study include Susan Poulton and Mark Dewhirst.

Golf Golf Roundup Tough task awaits Woods this morning Seattle Times Newspaper

8212; Tiger Woods' unbeaten streak lives another day. Barring a spectacular comeback, it will be over soon. Geoff Ogilvy got to 17 under par through nine holes and held a two-shot lead over Jim Furyk and Vijay Singh at the soggy CA Championship, which won't finish until today because of a three-hour weather delay during the final round.

Furyk was at 15 under through 10 holes Sunday, while Singh played nine holes. Retief Goosen and Graeme Storm were three shots behind and Steve Stricker made a huge charge, shooting a final-round 63 to finish at 13 under, four shots behind Ogilvy and tied with Adam Scott and Soren Kjeldsen. Play was scheduled to resume today at 5:30 a.m. PDT and Golf Channel will show the event. Much of the attention will be on the top-ranked Woods & 8212; who was five back with seven holes remaining.

In his own mind, he probably still thinks he has a chance and I'm sure we've seen him do crazy things before," Ogilvy said. But Jim and Vijay have won a fair-few tournaments and Adam's won a fair-few tournaments.. He doesn't have to only catch me." World Golf Championships events are some of Woods' favorites, given his 15 victories in 26 previous WGC attempts entering last week. But somehow, on the Blue Monster course at Doral, he has looked mortal.

He hasn't lost to anyone in more than six months, yet when play was halted, Woods was tied for ninth place. Ogilvy's last victory was in the 2006 U.S. Open.

Woods missed the cut that summer at Winged Foot and has been on a tear since, winning 16 of his last 26 official PGA Tour events and carrying winning streaks of seven consecutive appearances worldwide and five tournaments on Tour into the tournament at Doral, a place where he has prevailed in each of the past three years. Unless Woods pulls off a stirring comeback, all those streaks will end, meaning he will be a winner in merely nine of his past 11 events worldwide heading into the Masters, which starts April 10 in Augusta, Ga.

Ogilvy's bogey-free streak ended after 60 holes, when he left a 35-foot par putt short on the seventh hole. He was forced to scramble at times and said he was exhausted. It's a good leaderboard," Ogilvy said. That's what the whole point of these golf tournaments was, I guess, to get fields like this, get everyone playing each other.

I guess the idea is to have everyone have a chance with nine holes to play or 18 holes to play." Woods' chances took a serious hit in the third round, when every other contender seemed to go on birdie sprees while he remained stuck in the Doral mud. Singh and Storm shot 63s, Goosen and Furyk had 64s, but Woods had a third-round 72.

It's official: Kraft wins RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico & 8212; Greg Kraft won the inaugural Puerto Rico Open for his first official PGA Tour victory, closing with a 2-under 70 for a one-stroke victory over Bo Van Pelt and Jerry Kelly.

Kraft, who won the unofficial Deposit Guaranty Classic in Mississippi 15 years ago, had a 14-under 274 total on the Trump International Golf Club course. Kelly, at No. 63 the highest-ranked player in the field, shot a 70 and Van Pelt had a 72. Kraft earned $630,000 for the victory. I wish I could describe how I feel," he said. Maybe justice." Kraft, 43, secured PGA Tour playing privileges through 2010.

I don't have to play the Nationwide Tour to get my card back," he said. That's no fun, to go out there and starve." Other tournament & 8226; Scotland's Alastair Forsyth overcame a five-stroke deficit in regulation and beat South Africa's Hennie Otto with a birdie on the first hole of a playoff in the Madeira Islands Open in Santo da Serra.

Forsyth birdied the 18th hole for a 5-under 67 to match Otto (72) at 15-under 273. Forsyth birdied the par-4 18th again in the playoff for his first European Tour victory since the 2002 Malaysian Open.
